| Health Advocates for Older People was founded in 1985 by leaders
in community based long-term care. Our mission is to promote healthy aging by
providing older people living in New York City with the tools, techniques and
support the need to age with vitality and independence in the city they love. Health Advocates' engages this mission through our three major programs: education and advocacy, the Healthy Aging Program and the Community Volunteer Program. Education and advocacy involves educating elders, families, care-givers and the public at large on topics central to healthy, independent aging. In partnership with community leaders, like-minded non-profits, commercial businesses and faith-based communities, Health Advocates helps people of all ages identify the challenges faced by an aging population and advocate for improved services and support structures in both private and public sectors. The Healthy Aging Program provides a wide array of services, in an elder's home or nearby in the elder's neighborhood, that encourage social involvement, promote physical/mental wellness and evaluate home environments for safety. Healthy Aging Program services are provided free or at nominal cost to participants. The Community Volunteer Program, inaugurated in 2005, harnesses the good will and energy of an ever-increasing circle of committed volunteers to provide a wide range of services to elders in several New York City neighborhoods. Volunteers provide escorts to and from appointments, call on home-bound seniors, teach classes, provide administrative support and organize and staff special eventsand these are just a few of the many ways our volunteers make a difference in the community. ALERT! Donations can now be made directly from an IRA that may reduce your taxable distribution. Call us for details.
