Home Safety and Fall Prevention

Living Better by Design: Home Safety and Fall Prevention

Our Living Better by Design Team, which focuses on home safety and fall prevention, will provide you with a variety of solutions to help you maintain a high quality of life, at home.

Knowing that falls at home can have a major impact on your life and the ability to remain vital and independent, Health Advocates maintains a steady focus on fall prevention through:

  • Home consultations conducted by our team

  • Presentations about home safety and organization

  • Providing free assistive equipment (canes, wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc.)

Our Home Consultations

We offer free consultations, scheduled at your convenience, to recommend suggestions on ways to make your home safer and easier to navigate. Our team will provide you with individualized solutions to enhance your flooring, lighting, bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen safety to help you remain in your home for as long as possible.

To arrange for an at home consultation, call Josh Krasner, Living Better by Design Coordinator, at 212-980-1700 or josh.krasner@hafop.org. This program is supervised by noted home safety expert, Rosemary Bakker, MS, interior designer, gerontologist.

Health and Wellness

Health and Wellness activities offered throughout the city and online form the backbone of Health Advocates’ Healthy Aging Program.

Our exercise classes have achieved great success in helping participants remain active. These classes, which are offered in-person and online, are designed to improve physical agility, flexibility, balance, circulation, and lead to a decrease in tension and stress. All with the goal of promoting strength, mobility, and an active life.

Classes are taught by trained instructors who have experience working with individuals in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. The classes include:

  • Strengthen and Tone

  • Tai Chi

  • Reiki

  • Dance

  • Basic Exercise

  • Alexander Technique

  • Chair Yoga

In addition to our exercise classes, regular presentations from health experts explore common health issues such as changes in hearing, vision and mobility, and most importantly the need for regular exercise and proper nutrition. Speakers representing a wide variety of fields regularly offer presentations and a forum to ask questions and address concerns.

Social Activities

Fun and engaging activities provide opportunities for social connection by bringing our community together for weekly activities and special events including:

  • Saturday Afternoon Movies

  • Dance and Harmonica Lessons

  • Organized visits to museums and other cultural attractions

  • Afternoon game groups and knitting circles

  • A Monthly Men’s Lunch

  • Seasonal celebrations like our Harvest Lunch, Valentines Day Open House and Summer Picnic

  • Writing workshops

Intergenerational Technology Help

Young people are always up to date on the latest technology and are happy to share what they know with the Health Advocates community. To this end, Health Advocates partners with local high schools to arrange for students to meet one-to-one with participants at a Health Advocates partner location at one of our locations to answer questions about cellphone, tablet, iPad, and laptop use.
