A Night to Celebrate Community: Health Advocates’ 2026 Treasures Gala

Health Advocates for Older People welcomed 230 guests to a sold-out Treasures Gala on October 22 at the Union League Club in New York City. The evening celebrated outstanding community leaders and volunteers while raising funds for our free programs that help older New Yorkers live safely, healthily, and independently at home.

Honoring Community Leadership

This year’s New York Treasure Awards recognized Melissa Lewis Bernstein, a dedicated community leader and volunteer, and Nancy Rae Scully, a style icon who champions vibrant living at every age. The New York Junior League (NYJL) received the Volunteer of the Year Award for its longstanding commitment to community service and its contributions to Health Advocates. NYJL members support our programs through hands-on volunteering and leadership, making a meaningful difference in the lives of older New Yorkers. The award was especially timely as the League celebrates its 125th anniversary.

A Shared Commitment to Older New Yorkers

Assemblymember Rebecca Seawright, Chair of the New York State Assembly Committee on Aging and a longtime supporter of our Home Safety and Fall Prevention Program, joined the celebration and highlighted the importance of our work. She also recognized the additional state funding she secured for Health Advocates this year. “From preventing falls to fostering friendships, its free programs make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors,” Seawright said.

Gary Heinze, President of Health Advocates’ Board of Directors, praised the honorees for their contributions and underscored the importance of the organization’s mission.

“The Treasures Gala celebrates their contributions while highlighting the vital role Health Advocates plays in helping older New Yorkers stay active, connected, and safe at home,” Heinze said.

An Evening That Makes a Difference

Guests enjoyed dinner and live entertainment by the Alex Donner Orchestra while celebrating the people and partnerships that strengthen our community. The evening was a reminder that helping older New Yorkers live well takes a community-wide commitment.  Thank you to our honorees, Gala Committee, Co-Chaired by Lori Shepherd and Mary Herms, Junior Committee, agency staff and the volunteers who made the evening a special and successful one.

Thank you to our honorees, the New York Junior League, Assemblymember Seawright, our gala committee, and everyone who joined us and supported this important work. Your generosity helps make these programs possible for older New Yorkers.
