Head’s Up! Staying Safe as a Pedestrian in NYC
Did you know that while adults age 65+ make up just 17% of New Yorkers, they account for 47% of all pedestrian fatalities in the city? This startling statistic was highlighted during our December 4, 2025 Pedestrian Safety seminar led by Terrell Fitzpatrick Sr., Safety Education Officer and Outreach Specialist at the New York City Department of Transportation.
As we age, changes in hearing, vision, and mobility can make navigating busy streets more challenging. The good news: there are simple, effective steps we can all take to stay safe and confident when walking in the city.
Key Safety Tips from NYC DOT
Make yourself visible. Drivers may be distracted or have difficulty seeing you in low light or bad weather. Wear a bright scarf or hat, add a reflector to your zipper, or wave your hand or cane to catch a driver’s attention.
Be aware of blind spots. Larger vehicles have larger blind spots—especially when turning. Don’t assume a driver can see you.
Stay alert in the street. Avoid looking at your phone while crossing. Remember, drivers may also be distracted.
Look both ways—and then some. Most crashes happen at intersections. Watch for turning cars, cyclists going the wrong way, and vehicles backing up (white lights indicate reverse). Look left, right, and over your shoulder as you cross.
Pay attention to signals. A walk signal doesn’t always mean cars aren’t turning. Green or yellow arrows for drivers may appear at the same time. If the countdown timer at the crosswalk is low, wait for the next cycle to stay safe.
Use crosswalks. Drivers do not expect pedestrians mid-block. Cross only at marked crosswalks where drivers are more likely to see you.

Stay safe, stay seen, and keep enjoying the city you love!
